Changing the Narrative: Strategies for Shifting Public Discourse

Nisha Patel will discuss the US Partnership on Mobility from Poverty’s recommendation that dramatically increasing mobility from poverty will require changing the narrative on how we talk about poverty and people in poverty.  She will highlight some inaccurate narratives that the Partnership identified that we need to shift, as well as some examples of tactics they identified with an eye toward solutions. Drew Volmert will discuss the FrameWorks Institute’s research on reframing poverty in the United Kingdom. He will review the pitfalls that communicators face, present evidence-based strategies for shifting public thinking, and discuss how effective frames can make their way into the broader public discourse.
